Why TikTok Banned

A popular Chinese short video-sharing app TikTok was banned in Nepal. On 13 November 2023, the Nepal Government decided to ban this app.  The government has taken action saying that this app destroys the social harmony and social integration in Nepalese society.

Several other countries have sought to tighten controls on TikTok for allegedly breaking data rules and for its potentially harmful impact on youth.

The government alleged that Tiktok’s social media app has breached social harmony and goodwill and is being disturbed by the “misuse” of the video-sharing app and that there is a huge demand to control it.

Nepal’s Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma said the decision was made because TikTok, a video-sharing social media app was consistently used to share content that “disturbs social harmony and disrupts family structures and social relations”.

TikTok has already been either partially or completely banned by other countries India, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and many citing security reasons.

According to media reports there than a thousand six hundred cases related to cybercrime in the TikTok platform have been registered in the last 4 years in Nepal.

The government said that the TikTok officials did not immediately respond to a request on the matter such as “misguided” and “misconceptions”.

The government has cortile the Freedom of expression

Many opposition leaders including Gagan Thapa, leader of the Nepali Congress spoke against this decision. They raise their voices to “suffocate freedom of expression”. They urged that Regulation is necessary to discourage those who misuse and abuse social media.

People lost their Job

Due to government action to ban the TikTok app, some people have lost their jobs, and people the playing games, and creating other content to generate revenue in the TikTok App. Few people became TikTok stars and made millions of money.

Hampers in Small Business

TikTok has been used a free advertisement agency for small business in Nepal. Many small business people, who are from the remote area and village area.
